The periodic table currently has 118 confirmed elements. Elements 1–94 (hydrogen to plutonium) occur naturally; elements 95–118 are synthetic (created in laboratories). The most recently confirmed elements are: 113 (Nihonium, Nh), 115 (Moscovium, Mc), 117 (Tennessine, Ts), and 118 (Oganesson, Og) — confirmed in 2016.
The periodic table is organised by atomic number (number of protons) in increasing order. Elements in the same vertical column (group) have similar chemical properties and the same number of valence electrons. Elements in the same horizontal row (period) have the same number of electron shells. The 18 groups are numbered left to right; periods 1–7 run top to bottom.
