Why being "top 10%" doesn't feel rich
Two reasons. First, the urban bubble: you compare yourself to people in your city and profession, who are all clustered near the top — so the median you "feel" is far above the national median. Second, cost of living: ₹1 lakh a month in Mumbai or Bengaluru, after rent, EMIs and a metro lifestyle, doesn't leave the surplus the raw percentile suggests. Being statistically rich and feeling financially comfortable are two different things.

These figures are estimates of individual earner income (not household income), modelled from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS 2022-23) and National Statistical Office household income surveys, across roughly 500 million employed adults. India's distribution is highly unequal — the top 10% earn more than the bottom 60% combined — so the curve rises steeply at the top. Treat these as well-grounded estimates for perspective, not official tax statistics.
