Test your typing speed (WPM) and accuracy

The Typing Speed Test measures how fast and accurately you type, reported in words per minute (WPM) and accuracy percentage. Type the displayed passage and the test tracks your speed in real time, highlights mistakes as you go, and gives a final score when you finish. Typing speed is a genuinely useful skill — the average adult types around 40 WPM, while proficient typists exceed 70 — and regular practice with immediate feedback is the fastest way to improve. The test runs entirely in your browser, records nothing about you, and can be retaken as many times as you like to track your progress.
Words per minute uses the standard definition where one "word" equals five characters, so WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. This normalises for word length so scores are comparable across passages. Accuracy is the percentage of correctly typed characters out of the total typed, and many tests report "net WPM" by penalising errors. The timer starts on your first keystroke and stops at the end of the passage, while each character is compared against the target text in real time to flag errors. All measurement happens locally as you type.
The average adult types at 40 WPM. Professionals aim for 65–75 WPM. Government typing tests in India (SSC, railways, high courts) typically require 25–35 WPM in English and 20–25 WPM in Hindi. Above 50 WPM is considered proficient for most office and data entry roles.
Practice daily with structured tests. Focus on accuracy before speed — errors slow you down more than going slowly. Use all 10 fingers (touch typing with hands on the home row: ASDF JKL;). Most people can reach 60+ WPM with 30 minutes of daily practice over 2–3 months.
